Instructions Simmer meatballs in spaghetti sauce and dried oregano. While the meatballs are cooking, combine butter, garlic, parsley, and a couple large pinches of salt. Slice hoagie rolls lengthwise down the top of the roll, cutting a "V" shape out of the top of each hoagie roll.


1 large egg, beaten 1 cup (3 handfuls), Italian bread crumbs 1 medium onion, chopped fine 4 cloves garlic, crushed and minced 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 2 teaspoons (several drops).


Mix well by hand until all ingredients are well incorporated. Using hands (wet with cold water to prevent sticking), shape the meat mixture into 1.5″ balls. Don't make them too dense. Set on a large plate. When done, drizzle meatballs with olive oil. Preheat air fryer for 5 minutes at 380°F.


In a medium skillet or saucepan, heat olive oil on medium heat for 15 seconds, then add garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Add crushed tomatoes and stir well; add salt and sugar and stir again until combined


In a medium-sized saucepan, add cooked meatballs and 2 cups of marinara sauce. Heat over medium heat for about 5 minutes to warm meatballs and sauce. While the sauce is warming, prepare the hoagie rolls by preheating the oven to broil. Gently slice each roll down the middle making sure not to cut all the way through.


STEP 1. Start by cooking your meatballs. This can be done in the morning, or do it days/weeks in advance and freeze them until ready to use. For the meatballs, you can use ground beef or ground turkey. I usually opt for the ground turkey, but either is delicious in this basic recipe.

Spread garlic butter on the insides of each roll. Broil until golden, about 3 to 4 minutes. Assemble the subs. Place 4 meatballs on each roll.

Simmer for 5 minutes. Cut the sub rolls lengthwise and place them in the oven to toast for 5 minutes. Fill each sub roll with the meatballs and marinara sauce.


Broil the meatballs until browned and nearly cooked through, 5 to 7 minutes. Step 3. Move the skillet to the stovetop. Add the marinara sauce, stir to coat the meatballs, and warm over medium-low heat while you toast the rolls: Place the rolls on a baking sheet, cut-side up, and broil until lightly golden, 1 to 2 minutes.


Preheat the oven to 450˚F. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Using a bread knife, slice the hoagie rolls down the center, leaving the two sides attached, and open them up like a book. Add a little butter or drizzle of oil to the skillet and add the rolls cut side down.
